Theatrical Makeup

At American Backstage, we have everything one might need to create anyHundreds of wigs kind of effect, including latex appliances such as noses and chins and prepared beards and mustaches along with our many styles of wigs in natural shades and bright colors.

Need to be a Zombie? An old witch? A clown?  An Edwardian gentleman? Covered in blood? We can assist you.

In addition to Ben Nye products, we also carry theatrical makeup by Mehron, and Ben Nye makeuplatex applications by Cinema Secrets and Woochie.  If allergies are a concern, please ask for advice about which brand would be better for your skin.

We stock clown makeup by Ben Nye and Mehron - and of course we have clown costumes as well, and clown noses in several types so you can "pick your nose."  We even have several different kinds of stage blood.  (The stage blood from Ben Nye tastes like mint!)

We often do special bulk orders of student makeup kits for school musicals and plays.  Call us for details or check our "Specials" page.

For hair color needs, we now carry and recommend Jerome Russell hair color items.  This brand is the best we have found - it gives better coverage, washes out better, and stains less than other brands.  We have many colors and several types types of "spray in/wash out" temporary colors that come out after one shampoo.  We also have the popular sparkle sprays for hair, which can take more than one shampoo to remove completely.  Jerome Russell's "punky colour" line is semi-permanent and these outrageous colors are also very popular. Our customers also seem to like the spray on hair color thickener for thinning hair.

We have face paint too!  This is a higher quality and safer product than you can find in drugstores and party stores, and it's hypoallergenic.  Most customers find that the water-based product is easier to apply and remove.  We also have longer lasting face paints available.  These are best removed with petroleum jelly such as Vaseline.  We also stock body paints which are great for warm weather events such as Burning Man.

FROM OUR "F.A.Q." PAGE:  What is the difference between theatrical makeup and regular makeup?   There's a big difference.  As every performer knows, stage lights will "wash you out" and give you a very pale appearance.  Even large amounts of street makeup will not be enough to counteract this effect.  Standard everyday makeup only contains about 25% of the pigment used in professional theatrical makeup.  (Film makeup requires even more pigment. We carry some makeup for film use, and can order other types.)

Makeup removal:  We carry an excellent all-purpose makeup remover from Ben Nye called Quick Cleanse.  Some performers swear by this product.  Others find that unscented baby wipes work as well as anything else.  Many like to use an astringent such as Seabreeze, which can be bought at the drugstore, to clean out the pores.  This is particularly helpful for teen actors and others prone to acne.  After makeup removal, don't forget to use moisturizing products that work best for your own skin.
