  • 9 Ideas for Traditional Costumes to Help You Stand Out

So about ten years ago, I had a young lady in the the store, who walked up to me and said “I want to be something original this year; I want to be a black cat!” I laughed, and got her the pieces to be a black cat. I now realize that it wasn't so funny, as everybody has been moving over to pop-culture characters for their Halloween costumes. There has been a dearth of traditional or do-it-yourself Halloween costumes. Ironically, in our attempt to be “original,” we've ended up doing pop-culture costumes, but now that just makes us look more like everyone else. So these days, if you really want to stand out from the crowd, maybe it’s time to go back to basics! Try these ideas:

Historical Figures and Folklore Characters: Try going as a figure from history or folklore! This one has a built-in advantage, as you have a guaranteed conversation starter at parties. What’s more, you have virtually, unlimited choices, from the big names like George Washington, to lesser known figures like Anna Strong. Tell their story!1950’s, 60's and 70’s Outfits: Try going retro with a throwback to the well-known fashions of previous decades. Be a T-Bird, Hippie, or Disco Star! 1980's outfits are super in right now, so if you choose to go a bit further back in time, you'll be sure to make a memorable impression!
Fairy Tale Characters: Go beyond Disney; Try going as Mother Goose, or Ali Baba, or so many others!
Lesser Known Superheroes: Ever heard of Hour-man, The Phantom Stranger, or Zatanna? There are hundreds of classic superheroes and comic book characters that have not yet made it to the big screen. Give them some love!
Wild West: This one’s not as popular as it used to be, but there are so many great choices for Wild West Costumes, from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, to Doc Holiday, to The Lone Ranger, to Clint Eastwood’s classic “Man-With-No-Name” character, and much more!
Classic Halloween Costumes: The oldies-but-goodies! Ghosts, Witches, Fairies, Goblins, Vampires, Were-wolves, etc.
Circus Costumes: Buck the “scary clown” trend, with friendly, fun circus characters!
Animals: Dressing up as a lion, a penguin, a chicken, an elephant, or any other animal, is always fun at parties!
Career Costumes: You can always dress up for an exciting job or career. You could be a fire-fighter, a doctor, a chef, a pilot, a scientist, an astronaut, or lots of other things!
1950’s, 60's and 70’s Outfits: Try going retro with a throwback to the well-known fashions of previous decades. Be a T-Bird, Hippie, or Disco Star! 1980's outfits are super in right now, so if you choose to go a bit further back in time, you'll be sure to make a memorable impression!
Ancient Greek and Roman Mythology: We always get asked for Ancient Egypt costumes, but a lot of people forget about Ancient Greece and Rome. In addition to historical figures like Alexander the Great, or Julius Caesar, there’s always the great mythological gods and goddesses, such as Zeus, Poseidon, and Apollo, Artemis, and Athena. As a bonus, the famous myths of Greece and Rome also offer a whole lot of opportunities for great couples’ costumes! For example:
-Zeus and Hera (The king and queen of Mt. Olympus)
-Hades, the king of the underworld, and his wife Persephone, the goddess of springtime.
-The god of love, Cupid, and his wife Psyche (the most adorable couple in all of Greek/Roman mythology!)
